Trip Facts
Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing Overview
Tent peak is also known as Tharpu Chuli peak (5663m/18,563ft); This entire trip can be completed in 18 days. Tharpu Chuli is one of the easy trekking peaks in the Annapurna Himalaya range. The ascent requires ice and rock climbing equipment and experience. Tent peak climbing is suitable for those climbers who intend to step up from high pass trekking to amateur mountaineering. You will be climbing the standard Northwest Ridge, which is the grade at Peu Difficile (PD). Some vertical and ridge climbing sections make this climb very interesting and challenging for those attempting to climb a trekking peak for the first time. Our experience and operation Tharpu Chuli expedition is not as challenging as climbing another trekking peak because of its height and snow conditions.
Mr. Jimmy Roberts made a tent peak summit in 1956 via the Southeast Ridge. However, the Southwest Ridge, West Face ridge, is also open and has become a regular climbing route on Tharpu Chuli. Tent peak is best climbed in the spring (April, May) and autumn (September, October, November) seasons. The climbing on Tent Peak is reasonably straightforward, and the approximate Alpine climbing grade is PD+. The climb is mostly on snow slopes around 35-40 degrees and with some exposed ridge climbing. Fixed lines are to ensure that any uncovered areas are covered.
Tent Peak summit offers magnificent panoramic views of the majestic snow-capped mountains of the Annapurna region. The beautiful landscape during the trek adds yet another reason to plan a trip to this spectacular peak. When you trek along the mighty Modi River belt, you will experience the natural grandeur as well as the cultural magnificence of the most popular trekking route in the Annapurna region. The Himalayan plants, lush forests, colourful flowers, culturally rich local people, and snow-capped trekking peaks will surely mesmerise you. Once you complete the 45km drive from Pokhara to Nayapul along the Seti River, you will start your trek up to Poonhill. From Poonhill, you will have a beautiful view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
From Pokhara, it is best to start the trek from the village of Nayapul and acclimatise at several villages along the way, including Ghorepani(2700m/8,858ft)and Poonhill (3200m/10,498ft) before reaching the Annapurna base camp. The trek is roughly 7 days, mostly through forested areas, with stop-off points at the villages of Ghorepani(2700m/8,858ft), Tadapani (2675m/8,776ft), Chomrung (2040m/6,693ft), Doban (3230m/10,597ft) and Machapuchare Base Camp (3700m/12,139ft). From Machapuchare Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp (13,550ft) is a short distance, usually taking 2 hours at most. You will spend more time acclimatising before following the glacial moraine to Tharpu Chuli Base Camp. A further high camp is at 5000m. The route crosses the glacier from high camp and climbs a 40° snow slope to gain the North West Ridge. The ridge, which is broad at first, becomes knife-edged for the final 60m to the summit.

Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing FAQs
Tharpu Chuili also known as ‘Tent Peak’ is less than 6,000 m as it is 5,663 m (18,579 ft) high. Although, it is less than 6,000 m peak, this peak climbing can provide you excellent exposure and experience of mountain climbing in the Himalayas as it is some technical peak.
Access route to this peak is well established, with teahouse lodges available until very close to Base Camp along the famous Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Sanctuary trek trail.
In Annapurna Sacntuary, Singhu Chuli also known as Fluted Peak (6,501 m / 21,329 ft) is another peak to climb. It is much higher than Tharpu Chuli, and more technical. Both peaks are technical, but Singhu Chuli requires alpine mountaineering experience. Slopes, ice climbing part, snow and rock climbing, fixed rope length, exposed ridge on summit all are easier in Tharpu Chuli compared to the other.
Tharpu Chuli is located within Annapurna Conservation Area in the Annapurna sanctuary. Majestic Himalayan peaks, Annapurna South and Himchuli are in south, Annapurna I in western flank, Annapurna III and Gangapurna on the north, and Machhapuchre on the east.
Well established and world renowned trekking trail – Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Sanctuary trek– not only makes this peak accessible but also scenic journey in the Himalayas.
You need to have a good cardiovascular fitness with a capacity of hiking 6-8 hrs. a day on steep trails with backpack. Summit day is long with 8-10 hrs of walking over rough moraines and rocky terrain, snow slopes, and hard ice around summit headwall. Though not very steep, still moderate steep ascent and demanding descents must be done. Your body should adapt well in the higher altitude with proper acclimatization.
If you are thinking of just climb days, it is four days’ task from Base camp to high camp - summit and then descend to tea house in Machhapuchre Base Camp. If your curiosity is for whole trip days, our program is of 19 days starting and ending in Kathmandu combined with Annapurna trek. In addition, 2-4 days for your travel to Kathmandu and return to your home should be added depending upon your location. So, in total it can be 21-23 days.
In Tharpu Chuli climbing program, Annapurna Base Camp – the south face Base Camp of Annapurna I and a famous trekking destination - is the last town where tea house/lodge accommodation is available. So, from Kathmandu until here, we use tea-house lodge accommodation. From this Base camp town, you cross the Annapurna south glacier and hike up to slope towards the peak and pitch Base camp at 4,700 m/15,419 ft, where you sleep at tented camp. We pitch high-quality tents and provide high-altitude standard mattresses and sleeping mats for your good sleep and rest in Base Camp and high-camp at 5,200 m/ 17,060 ft. You spend maximum of three nights in tent.
Satori Adventures’ representative will be waiting you at the airport with your placard. Before you meet us, you are required to collect your luggage, clear immigration and customs, and proceed to arrival terminal. Airport and arrival terminal is small in Kathmandu, and you can easily find a person holding a placard with your name. We then transfer you to your pre-booked Hotel, and all other services included as per agreed itinerary.
Spring (April-May) is considered the best season for climbing Himalayan peaks. By these months, fierce winter winds ease, the monsoon rains are still away, and compressed winter snow creates a more solid and reliable climbing surface. Longer sunny days’ and warmer temperatures lessen the danger of frostbite, and cold. Clearer visibility, lighter snowfall, and increased stability in the snow-surface make this season ideal for a safer and more successful ascent.
