Trip Facts
Gasherbrum II Expedition Overview
Gasherbrum II (8035m/26,362ft) is the 13th highest 8000m peak in the world. The peak is also known in Pakistanas G2. G2 is located in the Karakoram, on the border between Xinjiang, China and Gilgit–Baltistan province in Pakistan. It is part of the Karakoram mountain range in the Himalayas, and located at the top of the Baltoro Glacier. Gasherbrum II is the third highest mountain of the remote Gasherbrum peaks. Satori Adventure offers full board and base camp support for a Gasherbrum (G2) Expedition. After many years of hard research and climbing, Australian expedition team leader Mr. Fritz climbed the Southwest ridge in the summer of 1956. Mr. Fritz Moravec with his two climbing partners Josef Larch, and Hans Willenpart was able to successfully summit on July 7, 1956.
G2 (8035m/26,362ft) peak is located at 35°45′30″N Latitude and 76°39′12″E longitude. G2 is a true Himalayan adventure, it has both a remote environment and extreme weather conditions. Gasherbrum II is suitable for those climbers whose focus is to climb larger 8000m peaks like Everest.G2 is a great objective for first-time 8000 meter peak climbers.
Satori Adventures fixes 3 camps on the mountain above the Advanced base camp. Our climbing guides believe that by fixing 3 camps above the summit, it greatly increases the odds that climbers will make the summit. Our philosophy is to approach all mountains including G2 with great care, recognizing the hazards involved in climbing high-altitude glaciated peaks. Gasherbrum 2 is one of the highest mountains in the world, posing all the risks that comes with such an impressive peak. With that being said, the normal route on the mountain is accessible due to less objective hazard. There is a substantial ice fall to negotiate on the way to camp one. Moreover, the weather can be very challenging. However, we plan to utilize a highly experienced staff, top-notch safety and mountain equipment, fixed rope in exposed or otherwise dangerous sections of the route, and slow conservative acclimatization to minimize our risk.
Satori guides have in-depth experience leading expeditions to 8000-meter mountains in Nepal, Pakistan and Tibet. Our Pakistani logistics partners have worked in the expedition business for over a decade and are some of the best logistic organizers and expedition management teams in the business. Our climbing and base camp support teams have significant experience in organizing multiple expeditions to 6000m, 7000m and 8000m peaks in Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet and China. The climbing is not especially steep but the remoteness of the setting makes this an especially rewarding experience. Whether this is your first 8000m peak or your third, the nature of climbing in this region will have its own unique flavor. We supply a chef, climbing Sherpa guide from Nepal and the use of Pakistani high altitude porters who have years of experience on the high 8000 meter mountains. Our staff works very hard to fix ropes, stock camps and assist our team in reaching the summit safely. We will employ a full cooking staff that specializes in healthy, abundant and tasty meals at base camp and advanced base camp.

Gasherbrum II Expedition FAQs
Gasherbrum II located in the Karakoram range near Mt. K2 is often taken as beginner’s peak on 8,000 m. If you lack experience climbing other 7,000 m or even easier 8,000 m peak like Cho Oyu, it is better to wait until you climb others and fully prepared. Gasherbrum II has shorter summit day compared to another Karakoram peak Broad Peak, and has some technical and steep section to climb.
If you want to gain experience, we recommend you climbing other 7,000 or even 8,000-meter peak in the Himalayas. Strong preparatory choices include Mount Cho-Oyu as easy 8,000er, Himlung Himal as good 7,000er, and others all of which will truly test your endurance, skills, and decision-making ability and prepare for Gasherbrum II expedition. The peak like Gasherbrum II demands honesty – with yourself first, then with your climbing partners, and the expedition organizer. At times during a climb, your life may depend on another person’s awareness and skill, just as their life may depend on yours.
Gasherbrum II is not really a much technical peak to climb like other peaks in the Himalayas, and K2 in Karakoram. Broad Peak in the region has longer summit day, and less technical but fatigue in descent and in other many references similar to Gasherbrum II. Cho Oyu in the Himalayas is generally taken as the least difficult 8,000er of the world which tests altitude whereas Gasherbrum II tests mountaineering ability.
Mt. Everest is both known for technical climbing and high altitude, whereas Mt. K2 is very steep, technical and the most difficult to climb.Comparing to other peaks, Mount Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft) has higher fatality rate and is considered deadlier due to constant avalanche risk in the Himalayas, while Nanga Parbat (8,126 m / 26,660 ft) is an equally demanding peak that requires elite-level mountaineering experience.
There are no rules regarding an age limit for the Gasherbrum II permit set by the government. However, we advise that climbers wishing to join our expedition be at least eighteen years old and possess excellent physical fitness, substantial climbing experience, medically fit, and possesses the ability to tackle a technically challenging high-altitude climb.
Our policy for accepting climbers on the Gasherbrum II expedition requires prior experience on peaks between 7,000 m or even 8,000 m easier peak like Cho Oyu. We also place great importance on physical fitness, as it ensures the safety of climber, their partners, and Sherpa team.
First and the foremost safety measure in high-altitude expedition is highly experienced and well trained Sherpa guide we put for your expedition. They can monitor conditions properly and have an excellent decision-making capacity in extreme situations. Our expedition program includes proper acclimatization so the risk will be lesser naturally. We back up emergency equipment such as supplemental oxygen, first-aid kits, communication devices properly. Your health from Base camp to higher camps will be monitored through pulse oximeters, and symptom tracking to detect altitude-related illnesses. And, we have proper rescue-evacuation plan.
Moreover, selection of camps on the mountain is a critical part of our safety precautions. We set up all Camps generally in safer areas. We give utmost attention to every safety measure throughout your expedition supported by our experienced Sherpa guides and staff.
Yes. Climbing permit is included in the package cost and Satori Adventures in coordination with Pakistan adventure company will arrange permit.
At Satori Adventures, your safety and smooth climb are our top priorities. If a Sherpa guide gets sick or is unable to continue at any point during expedition, we will immediately replace him/them with one of the additional Sherpa guide(s) in the team. We also maintain a pool of highly experienced backup Sherpa guides who can step in at any time. This ensures that each climber continues to receive personalized 1:1 support during the summit attempt.
Even in case that an issue arises during the summit push, the expedition leader can act as your personal climbing Sherpa guide. This is main reason why we always include 1–2 additional Sherpa guides beyond number required, to ensure safety, support, and flexibility throughout the expedition.
In a mountainous region of Karakoram, there is always a potential risk of natural disasters such as unexpected rainfall, heavy snowfall, severe storms, avalanches, flooding, landslides, and earthquakes. We are aware of these risks and have developed comprehensive emergency and evacuation procedures to ensure your safety on our expeditions. These includes backup communication devices to contact our support office in Pakistan, our office in Kathmandu and respond promptly in any emergency situation.
In the event of road blockages caused by major landslides or earthquakes, we will evacuate expedition members by helicopter as far as possible. Such evacuations are considered emergency evacuations due to force majeure, and the cost of helicopter rescue and other evacuation costs must be covered by your travel insurance.
It is important to arrange your travel insurance in your home country before departure. When purchasing a policy, ensure that it provides reliable services on timely manner, including emergency evacuation via fully equipped medical transportation. Some insurance companies may not have efficient communication channels in Pakistan or in high-altitude regions, which can delay response times in emergency situations. So check their support system and local agency presence.
Additionally, note that classification of emergency situations may vary between insurance companies. So, make sure that you are well-informed of their policies. Though, endorsing any specific company is not our policy, to the best of our previous experience and knowledge, Global Rescue is considered a reliable option.
Traveller Reviews
This was my third time travelling with Satori Adventures. This time we spent just a few days in Kathmandu and almost two weeks in the magnificent Land of The Thunder Dragon, Bhutan. Mr. Rishi Bhandari organised this amazing trip for us, and as usual, it was a fantastic and flawless experience. I love Nepal and this part of the world and I will continue to go back there. Every time I will go I will travel with Satori, they are a wonderful group of people who I consider to be my friends.
Thank you, Rishi, and all my Nepali friends, for once again making us feel at home in your country!
Best wishes from Canada,
Namaste!
