Everest North Col Expedition - 34 days (typically) days

Everest North Col Expedition is a great training climb for those interested in a future ascent of Mt. Everest. The Tibetan side of Mt. Everest has a rich history spanning over 90 years. The history of activity dates back to the 1920’s where the first attempts were made by a British team in 1921. George Mallory led a small team up to the North Col (7000m). They were the first confirmed people on the North Col.History on the North side of the mountain provides a bit of controversy. The first ascent of Mt. Everest still dominates Everest folklore, no one knows if Mallory and Irvin succeed on their 1924 expedition because they died on the ascent. If they did than this means that Tenzing and Hillary’s 1953 ascent would no longer stand as the first ascent. For the history of recorded climbing on the North side of the mountain it is a Chinese team who claims the first summit on May 25, 1960.  Nawang Gombu (Tibetan) and Chinese Chu Yin-Hau and Wang Fu-zhou were said to summit but did not provide a summit photo. Many doub the summit claim. Then in 1975, a successful summit was recorded by another Chinese team. Due to political turmoil Tibet was closed to foreigners from 1950 to 1980 preventing any further attempts.

The caravan route to base camp is an unforgettable journey. Tibet offers some of the most stunning cross country driving in the world. You can sit back in the jeep, relax and take photographs as you get chauffeured right to base camp. The overland drive takes you through Nyalam, Thang La (5,200m) and Xegar (4,300m).

The climb begins from Everest North base camp (5200m/17,000ft), then a trek up the historic East Rongbuk Glacier following along the 'Magic Highway' to middle camp (5800m/19,028ft) this camp is also referred to as (deposit camp/interim camp/Japanese camp) The climb continues onto advanced base camp (6350m/20,833ft) below the North Col, you then continue onto the north col aka camp I (7000m/23,000ft).

The position on the North side of Everest is a lot different from the South. Here you will experience colder temps, harsher winds and virtually no opportunity for helicopter rescue at any point. This is due to the fact that the Chinese government “for safety reasons” has outlawed the use of helicopters in that airspace.

Overall the ground is moderate the entire climb is across easy-angled glacier and snow slopes.Satori requests that for this expedition our clients have all of the previous experience required for 6000m peaks, very good physical fitness,no high blood pressure or diabetes, 2 (6000m) peaks, several high pass treks and formal rock &ice climbing training.

Our guides will fix the route as required from advanced base camp to the North col. Satori remains flexible and changes our tactics and style in the mountains depending on our clients needs. Overall, this expedition has the feel of being a tough trek at altitude. The climb stops before the technical “step” section shows itself above.
